How to Wear Dresses with Shorts Underneath

Summer dresses are a cool and breezy summer wardrobe staple but thigh chafe if often a deterrent. If you aren't familiar with thigh chafe it is the rubbing of thighs together which causes uncomfortable skin irritation. This isn't a size issue, thigh rub happens to men and women of all shapes and sizes.

Wearing summer dresses with maximum comfort can be achieved by wearing dresses with shorts underneath. These shorts are commonly referred to as slip shorts or biker shorts. When looking for a short to wear under your dress keep in mind a few important details.

Slip Short Length

Short slip shorts are ideal under shorter dresses or for women with shorter legs, however they do often ride up when walking or during activity. We recommend wearing a slip short length of at least 5." Most women find lengths between 7" and 9" to be of adequate coverage for maximum comfort.

When wearing a long dress with shorts, we recommend wearing the longest slip short available. This will provide the most coverage and comfort.

Slip Short Fabric Content

The fabric content of your shorts for under dresses is very important for maximizing your comfort. Look for synthetic fabrics such as polyester or nylon with spandex blends. These fabrics have moisture wicking & cooling properties which take moisture away from your skin. This allows it to evaporate, thus cooling your body. Lighter weight fabrics will also feel cooler as there is less fabric to keep heat in.

Moisture wicking fabric also is often quick dry which is also a bonus during the hottest and stickiest days. Look for fabrics that are soft to the touch. Nylon often is itchy when it gets wet so make note of the fabrics which feel best on your skin.

Avoid shape wear fabrics with tight restrictive spandex. These keep in heat and can cause chafing.

Construction

When looking for an anti chafe short for under dresses it is important to look for a single layer solution with a cotton gusset. This way your short is your underwear and you don't need another layer. Seams are also very important. Look for a seamless inner thigh. This will keep your legs free from additional chafe.

Many less expensive brands of biker shorts are fabric tubes with legs. These have bulky seams in between the thighs which can cause additional discomfort.

Stay put legs and no roll waists are also important features to look for in your non chafing short for under dresses. Comfort is achieved when you are not adjusting your undergarments.

Avoid bulky harsh seams and itchy laces. It is important to purchase brands such as Undersummers which prioritizes silky soft lace trim.

Shorts Under Dresses as an Accessory

Your shorts can be a fashion accessory under your dress. Shorts with lace or "bike" short like shorts are an obvious choice. Shorts can also be worn under party dresses. If you are in a wedding or a wedding guest, slip shorts willk keep you comfortable for the entire event. Pair complementary colors or use a monochrome color matching to make your Shortlette part of the outfit. This way if your shorts peak out, they look like they were meant to show!

ABOUT US

Meet our founder: CarrieRae

Undersummers Shortlettes were created CarrieRae's personal need for comfortable thigh protection when she was working as a teacher. In 2011, her thick thighs rubbed and she needed a comfortable solution.  Pants are blazing hot in the Houston spring/summer months, shorts are not acceptable to wear to work, so she was left with capris and dresses.  Her thighs did not support wearing dresses, thigh chafing was too uncomfortable.  The idea of wearing a breezy dress sounded so comfortable to her, that she created the solution to her problem:  The Original Lace Shortlette®️. She wanted something to wear that was a single layer, the legs stayed put, comfy, and most importantly, pretty.
